Manager, Biologics Laboratory
This individual will be a key member of the research team at the InMotion Musculoskeletal Institute. The individual will be responsible for the overall management for the biologics (wet lab) laboratory as well as the technical staff working in this laboratory. (S)He will work closely with the principal investigator/clinician scientist to develop and execute the scientific direction of the laboratory.
The manger will supervise the day-to-day operations of the laboratory as well as be responsible for the technological and scientific direction and research goals for this laboratory. (S)He will lead and direct projects, train and supervise department personnel on instrumentation and the adherence of proper work practices, provide leadership, coaching, and mentoring and serve as a resource to others in the resolution of complex problems and issues.
(S)He will ensure that the laboratory complies with all regulatory requirements and regulations. This individual will use advanced skills in the relevant research arena to further extend research in the field of musculoskeletal disease or injury.
The individual will develop and implement research procedures and publish research results. (S)He initiates and conducts independent research without direct supervision and assists with the management of a large multi-disciplinary research operation at the InMotion Musculoskeletal Institute.
This individual should have a PhD in an appropriate scientific field (i.e. biochemistry, cell biology, etc.) with a focus on musculoskeletal research in the area of disease or injury specific to musculoskeletal tissues. In addition, a minimum of three-years work experience consistent with that expected of a research scientist in orthopaedics is required.
Ideally, this individual should have experience in managing and supervising a laboratory and technical staff associated with work in this arena. Experience must also include study design methodology, protocol development, study conduct and analysis and writing manuscripts and presentation of research materials at in-house and national meetings.
Special skills, knowledge, and abilities include:
- The ability to initiate and conduct experiments with no supervision
- Advanced laboratory skills
- Ability to direct and train other laboratory personnel
- Knowledge of medical, scientific, and technical terminology in musculoskeletal research
- Skills and ability to communicate orally and in writing with a variety of constituencies
- The ability to solve problems and make decisions in a timely fashion
- The ability to operate independently and collaboratively as part of a team as well as take direction from principal investigators for the biologic research performed at InMotion Musculoskeletal Institute
- The skills and ability to anticipate, manage and adapt to change
- The knowledge and skill with word processing, spreadsheet, email, data base and presentation computer software applications (e.g. MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, PowerPoint, etc.)
(S)He will play a key role at the institute and must therefore must have impeccable character and integrity, be able to provide leadership, maintain effective working relationships among the various departments, programs, and administrative units with our research partners, actively seek protection of intellectual property and manage all research programs with fiscal prudence and careful attention to the responsible stewardship of its resources.
A record of thoughtful and wise decision-making, creativity, innovation, vision, and imagination in previous and current positions is desirable.
