Clinician Scientists –Total Joint Replacement and Trauma
This individual will be a staff member of the Campbell Clinic as well as a principal investigator for the InMotion Musculoskeletal Institute. For Campbell, (s)he will provide strategic leadership in clinical care and will report to the Chief of Staff regarding clinical practice and surgery. For InMotion, (s)he will conduct cutting-edge musculoskeletal laboratory and clinical research and will report to the President & Executive Director.
(S)he should provide strong, strategic, and visionary leadership and is expected to:
- Be an outstanding clinician in the field of total-joint replacement or trauma.
- Work for InMotion, an independent musculoskeletal research institute that partners with Campbell Clinic, Campbell Foundation, University of Tennessee Health Science Center, University of Memphis, Memphis Bioworks Foundation, Memphis Tomorrow, and a variety of other musculoskeletal industry and hospital entities
- Maintain an environment of excellence in basic, applied, translational, and clinical musculoskeletal research
- Oversee the creation of new research programs
- Participate in the research community, including active involvement in key research organizations, such as the Orthopaedic Research Society, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and other specialty societies
- Seek and maintain research funding from government and private sources, as well as seek publication in top-tier, peer-reviewed journals
- Maintain effective working relationships among the various departments, programs, and administrative units of the Campbell Foundation, InMotion, and research partners
- Seek protection of intellectual property and seek commercial partners or licensees for intellectual property at fair market values
- Manage research programs with fiscal prudence and responsible stewardship of resources
The Clinician Scientist must be a proven researcher in his/her orthopaedic field, with success obtaining extramural funding for research projects and programs, with an impressive career reputation, and with the passion, energy, enthusiasm, and creativity to lead through vision, communication, and execution. (S)he must be a strategic thinker and leader, capable of managing and mentoring staff and other investigators.
Specific skills and experience include:
- An impeccable character and integrity
- A distinguished record of scientific achievement in the total-joint replacement and trauma research fields
- The ability to represent the organizations publicly and to articulate and advocate musculoskeletal research to diverse audiences, including peers, high-level policy makers, community leaders, the media, and others
- The ability to write and speak cogently and persuasively
- A thorough knowledge and understanding of the field of musculoskeletal total-joint replacement or trauma research and a passion for researching state-of-the-art advancements. The ability to identify new research areas and clinically relevant opportunities for treatment
- The ability to cultivate new opportunities to expand understanding of musculoskeletal total-joint replacement or trauma research and clinical care treatment options to serve patients afflicted with these conditions or injuries, as well as to elevate the reputation of Campbell Clinic and InMotion Musculoskeletal Institute
- The ability to promote an open, inclusive environment that emphasizes cooperation and teamwork. Proven ability to build trust and to ensure accountability throughout an organization, and the ability to make decisions in a timely fashion
- A record of thoughtful and wise decision-making, demonstrated leadership, creativity, innovation,vision, and imagination in previous and current positions
- A Doctor of Medicine degree with specialty board certification in Orthopaedics from an accredited institution, with experience in the musculoskeletal field as a principal investigative researcher and clinician
- A post-graduate degree (e.g., Ph.D. and/or M.B.A.) is desirable.
- Experience in attracting extramural funding on a competitive national basis, publications in refereed journals, and formal presentations at national and international meetings
- Experience in a 501(c)(3) organization is helpful.
