Changing the culture of research

The Commercial Appeal | Wednesday, July 26, 2006

InMotion Musculoskeletal Institute is looking to Pittsburgh as a model for successfully creating a constructive culture.

IMI president and executive director Dick Tarr said the institute's success will depend on convincing universities and companies to work together without battles over the rights to discoveries.

So the group has invited Alan Russell to Memphis next month deliver lectures on techniques he applied at the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh.

Tarr credited Russell with bringing different groups together for common research goals.

The institute will work with universities, medical groups and biotech companies create new orthopedic remedies and devices.

Russell will speak at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, at the Campbell Foundation auditorium, 1211 Union, and at the FedEx Institute of Technology at 2 p.m.
