| InMotion Interns Serve More than Coffee A central mission at InMotion Musculoskeletal Institute is to recruit the scientists who will run Memphis’ medical research labs in the future. But a growing internship program is proving that InMotion can grow its own future scientists by offering meaningful jobs to students and instilling them with a passion for the work. This summer InMotion has four college students who are getting a taste of real scientific research by taking on real projects. In the process they are learning proper research methods, from preparation to reporting to analysis. At the end of the day, they will get what many long for: status as co-author in a peer-review article. “It’s something no other medical student gets to do,” said Seth Cooper, a second-year student at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine. | Applying Engineering Technology to Orthopedic Research When a tibia is fractured, the standard for securing the bone is to perform intermedullary nailing through the anterior knee. While it is the most structurally sound method, the common complaint from patients is anterior knee pain. For years the nail has been blamed as the obvious source of pain; with the solution simply being to remove the nail. Unfortunately, many of the patients continue to feel the same level of pain after removal, a fact that has caused controversy among clinicians. ___________________________________________________________

InMotion Study Finds Knee Pain Solutions When a person picks a popcorn hull from their teeth it typically leads to better feeling gums. Remove a 15-inch metal rod from the lower leg, however, and the pain does not go away. Figuring out why that is became an engineering mystery last fall at the InMotion Musculoskeletal Institute. The answers were a major topic of discussion last month when orthopedic surgeons from all over the world gathered in San Francisco for the annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. ___________________________________________________________ |
