Dr. S. Terrance Canale received his M.D. from the University
of Tennessee Health Science Center in 1967. He currently is
Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, the Boyd
Professor of Orthopaedics, President of Campbell Clinic Foundation,
and treasurer of InMotion Musculoskeletal Research Institute.
Dr. Canale joined the staff of the Campbell Clinic in 1974
after completion of his orthopaedic residency at Jefferson
Medical College in Philadelphia and a year’s service at the
US Army hospital in Fort Hood, Texas.
Throughout his career, he has been active in a number of local,
regional, and national specialty organizations, including the
American Orthopaedic Association (AOA), the American Academy
of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), and the Pediatric Orthopaedic
Society of North America (POSNA). He was former president of
both POSNA and AAOS. Among his other positions are president
of COMSS (now COS) and president of Orthopaedics Overseas.
He currently is also the Editor-in Chief of AAOS Now.
Dr. Canale has contributed significantly to the orthopaedic
literature in both journals and textbooks. He has served as
editor for three editions of Campbell’s Operative Orthopaedics,
co-editor of two editions of a pediatric orthopaedic text,
and contributor to a number of other orthopaedic texts and
journals. His interest in research and education have led him
to a long-term position on the Research Committee of Campbell
Foundation positions of leadership in the educational efforts
of POSNA and the AAOS, and current involvement in InMotion.
He was instrumental in the development of the basic science
research arm of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and helped
to recruit several prominent researchers to this department.
Dr. Canale serves or has served with 18 civic organizations
including St.Peters Orphanage, University Club of Memphis,
First City Bank Board of Directors, Synergy Foundation Board
of Directors, Musculoskeletal Research Institute Steering Committee,
and the Greater Memphis Arts Counsel. He also has participated
as a team physician for local collegiate sports teams.
Outside his professional life, Dr. Canale is an accomplished
artist; his works have been displayed both locally and nationally.
He and his wife, Sissie, have two children (Haines Loden and
Rob Canale) and two grandsons, Douglas and Terry.
